How to Send Flowers to a Graveside Funeral

With the loss of a loved one, you may experience great difficulty not only in expressing your feelings, but also in selecting and sending a flower arrangement. A graveside funeral adds another difficult component, as many people don’t know the appropriate etiquette involved in sending flowers to a funeral.

1 Contact the funeral parlor

Contact the funeral parlor handling the service to find out if the family of the deceased accepts flowers. Depending on the type of service and the family's religious beliefs, graveside flower arrangements may be inappropriate.

2 Confirm the funeral home or cemetery policy or for accepting and displaying flower arrangements

Confirm the funeral home or cemetery policy for accepting and displaying flower arrangements. Also confirm the time of the service and the address for delivery. Don't worry if you're told that the flowers must go to the funeral home instead of directly to the cemetery. Many funeral homes transport flowers as part of their services, especially when a funeral is held at graveside.

3 Call or visit a local florist

Call or visit a local florist, or visit websites such as 1-800-FLOWERS or FTD. Florists offer advice on the best type of arrangements and messages of sympathy. They can also tell you the meaning of certain flowers. Typical funeral arrangements include sprays, wreaths, baskets, and vases.

4 Decide

Decide on a flower arrangement and message of sympathy. Messages of sympathy appear on flat or folded card stock. Examples include "With Our Sympathy," or "With Heartfelt Sympathy."

5 Place your order

Place your order. Ask the florist to call and confirm delivery upon receipt. If you use an online florist, many provide customers with a user account and delivery tracking services.
