How to Puff Your Bangs

Bangs can be indecisive, working to frame your eyes over breakfast and becoming limp and stringy by lunch. The full fringe sported by the likes of Zooey Deschanel can seem like a pipe dream at times, but it doesn't have to be out of reach. The key to perfect puffed bangs is in the way that they are set straight out of the shower. If left to their own devices for too long, bangs will dry as they please. Train your bangs to sit with lift, and they'll be the finishing touch you've been dreaming about.

Shampoo and lightly towel dry your bangs.

Comb your bangs through with a wide-tooth comb to remove any tangles.

Position a natural-bristle round brush under your bangs, directly at the root.

Aim a blow-dryer with an attached nozzle at the root of your bangs, and turn it on to low heat.

Slowly rotate the round brush under while pulling hair in the opposite direction of the direction that you'd like your bangs to fall, with the nozzle aimed at the root. If you like your bangs to sit to the left, pull them to the right side of your face. To make them sit to the right, pull them to the left. If you prefer your bangs to fall straight down, start by directing them to the left. Continue until bangs are 50-percent dry.

Position the round brush under your bangs again, directly at the root.

Rotate the brush under, while pulling your bangs in the direction that you'd prefer them to sit and aiming the low heat of the blow-dryer over the hair. For bangs that sit straight down, pull them to the right this time. Continue until bangs are completely dry.

Remove the brush and place a self-adhesive roller under your bangs, starting at the tip. Opt for a 1-inch roller to create a small puff and a 2-inch roller for more volume.

Rotate the roller under, towards your head, until it reaches the root.

Allow your bangs to cool completely.

Remove the roller once hair is cool, and use your fingers to gently position your bangs as desired.

Spritz the root of your bangs with dry shampoo to absorb excess oils that may flatten them or cause separation.

Hold a can of volumizing hairspray 10 inches away from your head, and spritz your hair for added hold.

  • Reapply dry shampoo throughout the day if bangs need extra volume.
  • If you're in a rush, turn on your blow-dryer's cool air setting and aim it at the bangs while on the roller. Cool air helps to seal and set the cuticle.
