It can be hard for plus-sized women to find flattering dresses that aren't shapeless or voluminous. For a slimming effect, look for dresses that create shape by flattering the waist and elongating your body, all while hiding troublesome areas. Fabrics that are draped and flowing, rather than thin or clingy, will help to create a smooth and streamlined silhouette.

1 Minimize With a Maxi

Maxi dresses in the right shape work wonders for a plus-size figure by making you look long and lean and hiding any bulge around the midsection, hips and thighs. Choose a V-neck style that draws attention to your collarbone or bust. Wider straps or sleeves help to de-emphasize full arms or shoulders, and horizontal stripes or panels help to elongate the silhouette.

2 It's a Cinch

Create a flattering hourglass shape by wearing a dress or separates that cinch at the waist. Wrap dresses and shirt dresses that are belted or sashed at the waist are both flattering ways to achieve this effect. Choose a dress with natural shoulders and a slim fit on top to avoid creating unnecessary volume. A high-waisted skirt paired with a blouse also helps to create a small-waisted silhouette. If you want to hide full hips and thighs, go for a full skirt, or choose a fit-and-flare dress that is slim on top and flares out at the waist.
