If you enjoy planning events and have a creative flair, being a wedding planner may be an ideal job choice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2010, the annual median pay for this profession was $45,260. Earning a wedding planner certificate will allow you to work in a hotel setting, resort or as an independent contractor. Several colleges across the U.S. offer certificate programs in online and on campus formats. Programs are designed to provide convenience and flexibility.

East Coast

Penn Foster Career School has a campus in Pennsylvania and offers a certified wedding planner program in an online and in class format. You can work at your own pace to complete this program. The program consists of five units that focus on planning, wedding etiquette, bridal business, specialty weddings and business aspects. It is based upon the Association of Bridal Consultants guidelines. Upon graduation, you will be eligible for certification and will receive a voucher toward a certified wedding planner membership. You will need access to a computer with an updated operating system and Internet access.


Triton College in River Grove, Illinois has a certificate in wedding/event planning. This program meets weekly for one semester and provides education about wedding and event planning. You will learn about the history of the wedding industry, client support, negotiating contracts and industry standards. This course connects classroom lectures to experiential learning. After finishing the program you will receive a certificate of completion indicating expertise in wedding and event planning.


Ashworth College is located in Norcross, Georgia and offers a career diploma in wedding planning. Graduating from this program will enable you to be certified as a Sandals Resorts Destination Wedding Specialist. You will also receive a membership in the Association of Bridal Consultants. Tuition includes books, study guides, career exploration assistance and wedding resources. Curriculum covers wedding organization, time and task management, ideas to stay within budget and honeymoon planning. The program can be completed in as little as six months.

West Coast

California State University, East Bay offers a weekend class option in wedding planning. Curriculum in this program covers event design, wedding planning, wedding trends and customs. Special topics include working with specialty sub-contractors such as bakers, lighting designers and musicians. The program takes place in six class sessions over the course of five months. Endorsed by the Northern California Chapter of the International Special Events Society, graduates are prepared to be wedding or event planners upon completion.
