Requirements for a Doctorate in Education in Wyoming

The Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree is research intensive, while the Doctor of Education degree is geared toward careers in educational administration. In Wyoming, both the Ph.D. and the Ed.D. are offered at the University of Wyoming in several different fields. The University of Wyoming is the only school in the state that offers Education doctoral programs on campus.
1 Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D.
The University of Wyoming's Counselor Education and Supervision Ph.D. program prepares students for careers as faculty members in university-level Counselor Education programs. A master's degree in Counseling, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and a score of 291 on the Graduate Record Examination are required for admission. Depending on the number of credits earned in the master's degree, students must complete 48 to 60 credit hours for the Ph.D., including 9 credits of core courses, 18 credits of specialization courses, 12 credits in advanced research methods and 12 dissertation credit hours.
2 Education Ph.D.
The Ph.D. in Education at the University of Wyoming is divided into three programs, each of which have different admission requirements. For the Adult and Post Secondary Education program, minimum admission requirements include a GPA of 3.0 and a GRE score of 291. Programs in Educational Leadership and Instructional Technology require a minimum GPA of 3.5 and a 291 GRE score. All programs require a minimum of 4.0 on the GRE analytical writing section. Students do not need a master's degree for admission and will complete 81 credit hours in the program. All students must complete 9 credits of core courses, 18 credits of specialization courses, 12 credits in advanced research methods and 12 dissertation credit hours.
3 Curriculum & Instruction Ph.D.
The University of Wyoming's Ph.D. program in Curriculum and Instruction offers concentrations in Curriculum Studies, Literacy Education and Math or Science Education. The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction requires completion of 79 credits, 12 of which must be dissertation research credits. The College of Education does not specify minimum GPA or GRE requirements for admission to this program. However, most doctoral programs require at least a 3.0 GPA and a 291 GRE score, so students should expect similar prerequisites.
4 Doctor of Education
The Ed.D. program at the University of Wyoming is divided into four different programs. The Adult and Post Secondary Education and Instructional Technology programs do not require a master's degree, and minimum admission requirements are a GPA of 3.0 and a GRE score of 291. Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Administration programs do require a master's degree prior to admission and the Educational Administration program requires a 3.5 GPA on the master's transcript. Students in all programs will complete 77 to 81 credits and a dissertation. Students in the Adult and Post Secondary Education and the Educational Administration programs also have an internship requirement.
