How to Access AKO Mail on a Cell Phone

The Army Knowledge Online email service is deliverable through IMAP email retrieval, which means you can set up your current email account on most cell phones. You can access your account using an Android phone, an iPhone or a Windows phone, although many BlackBerry devices use email aggregators to deliver mail, which AKO email does not permit due to security risks.

1 Android

2 Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings

Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings, as Gmail is the default email client for Android cell phones. Sign in to your Gmail account and click the gear icon. Select "Settings" and click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP." Select "Enable IMAP" and click "Save Changes."

3 Tap Email From the Home screen

Tap "Email" From the Home screen to open the application. Tap the menu icon and then tap "Settings." Tap "Next" in the top corner.

4 Enter your AKO email address and password

Enter your AKO email address and password. Tap "Next" and tap "Done." You will see a message informing you if the application successfully connects with your account.

5 Tap

Tap the menu icon and then tap "Account" if the application was unable to connect automatically. Type "imap.us.army.mil" into the Incoming Mail Server field and type "mailrouter.us.army.mil" into the Outgoing Mail Server field to manually enter the correct settings. Tap "Save Changes."

7 Tap Accounts

Tap "Accounts," then "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" and "Add Account." Tap "Other" in the Options list and tap "Add Mail Account."

8 Want displayed in email messages

Type the name you want displayed in email messages into the Name field. Type your AKO email address in the Address field. Type your AKO password in the Password field. Enter a nickname for the account in the Description field.

9 Tap and wait while your iPhone

Tap "Next" and wait while your iPhone attempts to connect to the AKO servers. Tap "Next" when the Account Info screen appears. Ensure "Mail" is on and tap "Save." Tap "Home" to return to the Home screen if your iPhone is able to configure the account automatically.

10 Enter the AKO server information

Enter the AKO server information manually if your phone was unable to connect to the servers. Enter "imap.us.army.mil" in the Host Name field, your AKO user ID in the User Name field and your AKO password in the Password field of the Incoming Server section.

11 Enter mailrouter.us.army.mil

Enter "mailrouter.us.army.mil" in the Host Name field, your AKO user ID in the User Name field and your AKO password in the Password field of the Outgoing Server section. Tap "Save" to complete the configuration.

Enter your AKO email settings manually on your Windows phone. Swipe to the left from the Start screen to access your App list. Tap "Settings" and then tap "Email + Accounts."

14 Tap Add an Account and then tap Advanced Setup

Tap "Add an Account" and then tap "Advanced Setup." Type in your AKO email address and password, then tap "Next."

15 Enter a nickname

Enter a nickname for the account in the Account Name field. Type the name you want displayed in emails in the Your Name field. Type "imap.us.army.mil:993 " in the Incoming Mail Server field.

16 Select IMAP4 .''

Select "IMAP4." Type your AKO user name and password. Enter "mailrouter.us.army.mil:465" in the Outgoing Server field.

17 Tap Advanced Settings

Tap "Advanced Settings" and confirm your settings. Select the download settings you want to use and type "Sign In" to access your account.
