AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, was founded in 1958 with the mission of improving the quality of life of Americans over the age of 50. Many people--the AARP counted almost 40 million members in 2010--choose to join AARP to get discounts on a variety of items and services, to meet others over 50 and to support the organization and its political efforts. Canceling an AARP membership and receiving a refund for the remainder of your subscription can be done over the phone.

1 Dial 1-888-687-2277

Dial 1-888-687-2277 on your telephone to speak to a representative in English. Have your AARP card out, if you can find it, so you have your information on hand.

2 Follow the automated prompting

Follow the automated prompting, saying "yes" when asked if you are an AARP member, and saying "membership card" when asked what you are calling about. Speak clearly into the phone to ensure your call is correctly routed.

3 Speak with the customer service representative

Speak with the customer service representative, letting them know you wish to cancel your membership. They will ask some questions for you and help you end your membership.
