The field of robotics engineering consists of diverse topics, though most work focuses on ways to enhance core robotics technologies like locomotion, manipulation and control. Other research areas include computer vision, machine learning and graphics. Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute offers various degrees in robotics engineering, but is known mainly for its research endeavors. Currently the university is working on ProbeSight, a kind of technology that uses video cameras to give vision to ultrasound transducers. Associate Degree Programs
Some universities offer lower degrees to satisfy employment requirements for students who have no desire to earn a bachelor's or graduate degree. Hennepin Technical College offers an associate degree in applied science with a focus on robotics engineering technology. The school specifies that this degree type is perfect for automated packaging machine mechanics and technicians. However, someone wanting a career as a robotics engineer would need to enroll in a more advanced degree program.
B.S. in Robotics Engineering
A Bachelor of Science degree in robotics engineering can lead to employment in the robotics industry or prepare students for more demanding work at the graduate level. Although various universities have slightly different curriculums for their B.S. degrees in robotics engineering, the requirements at Lawrence Technical University are typical for this degree type where the majority of classes focus on the sciences. LTU requires 19 credits in humanities classes with an emphasis on leadership, and 51 credits in basic science, communications, computer science and math. They also require students to earn 11 credits in mechanical engineering and 29 credits in general engineering.
