Many New Age philosophies espouse that things such unpleasant events, long periods of bad luck or difficult conflicts can create “bad vibes,” a type of lasting, negative spiritual energy that can continue to influence mood and events in an undesirable way. The process for ridding yourself, a place or part of your life of accumulated bad vibes might be described in a number of slightly different ways, but the basic principles are always similar.
Prepare your ritual space’s atmosphere. Surround yourself with an ambiance that makes you feel peaceful, such as burning candles, incense, calming music or ritual items such as sea salt, feathers, crystals or small statues. Choose items that are meaningful to you.
Meditate briefly to clear your mind. Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes and take deep, slow breaths. Focus on relaxing the muscles in your body and clearing your mind. Do this for at least 10 minutes; longer if desired.
Keep your eyes closed and focus on the bad vibes you want to cleanse. Imagine the source or location of the negative energy, whether it’s in your body, in a physical space or related to a situation. Picture the source in your mind (or, for bad vibes associated with a situation, picture images that bring those circumstances to mind).
Try to feel a sense of touching and locating the negative energy without letting it enter or affect you. If this is difficult, pull back from this image and try to feel peaceful again. Imagine that you’re wearing a magical “force field” that will protect you from the bad vibes, then try again. If the energy is in your body, you won’t be able to avoid feeling it, but focus on holding on to a peaceful feeling at the same time.
Cleanse the negative energy. Imagine the space, images or your body filling with positive energy. Use any image or concept you like to suggest positive feeling, such as light, radiating warmth, color, water or music. Picture this energy filling the vibe that needs to be cleansed and overpowering the negative energy and transforming it. If you find that this takes some time and that the negative energy seems to be resisting you, relax and let the positive energy flow more freely; don’t tense or try to “fight,” just focus on the feeling of the good vibes.
