How to Convert an iMovie to Premiere Elements

Adobe Premiere Elements makes transitioning from iMovie a simple task. You can quickly convert an iMovie video file or project to Adobe Premiere Elements with the Elements importing tools. In fact, you can automatically convert all iMovie and iPhoto projects saved on your computer to Premiere Elements projects at one time with the Elements Organizer. When you use the Elements Organizer, your iPhoto and iMovie projects are imported so you can edit the source files in Elements.

1 Importing an iMovie

2 Open Premiere Elements

Open Premiere Elements, then click the “Add Media” tab.

3 Click Files and Folders

Click the “Files and Folders” option, then browse to the iMovie file on your hard drive.

4 Click the iMovie file to import

Click the iMovie file to import, then click “Import.” To import an entire folder, click the folder, then click the “Import Folder” button. The file or folder is imported in to Elements, and the thumbnails for the photos and videos display in the Elements main screen.

5 Right click

Right-click on the thumbnail of an iMovie project to edit, then click “Edit with Premiere Elements Editor” to open the project for editing.

7 Open Adobe Premiere Elements

Open Adobe Premiere Elements, then click the “File” option in the top menu.

8 Click Get Photos and Videos

Click “Get Photos and Videos,” then click the “From iPhoto” option to launch the Elements Organizer.

9 Click at the Elements Organizer prompt

Click “OK” at the Elements Organizer prompt. The Elements Organizer searches your computer for iPhoto and iMovie files. A confirmation prompt displays when all items have been imported into Premiere Elements. A thumbnail displays in the Premiere Elements main screen for each imported file.

10 Click OK

Click “OK.” You can now open your iMovie projects in Adobe Premiere Elements.

Right-click on the thumbnail of an iMovie project to edit, then click “Edit with Premiere Elements Editor” to open the project for editing.

  • Note that the iPhoto options do not appear in Adobe Premiere Elements if the applications are not installed on the same computer.
