Math is a subject that a lot of high school students struggle with. But there’s an app for that -- or several, actually. Mobile apps for iPhones and Androids can be downloaded for free or for cheap and help high school students improve their knowledge of graphs, geometry, pre-calculus, square roots and other mathematics commonly found in high school curricula.

This app was selected by “Time Magazine” as one of the top 10 back-to-school iPhone apps on the market. It transforms your smart phone into a high-resolution graphing calculator and function plotter. Students can plot multiple equations on a single graph with scaling features that allow users to zoom and drag or slide for scrolling purposes. This app developed by Appcylon LLC has an excellent rating, with users granting 4 1/2 stars out of a possible 5.

Algebra Touch

Whether you need to brush up on your algebra skills or simply want to stay sharp, Algebra Touch by Regular Berry Software LLC will keep you up to speed on your skills with its touch-based system. Users can swipe their fingers to move numbers and arrange them in any fashion on the screen. You can also work with randomly generated problems to build your skills or develop your own through the equation editor. It has an outstanding user rating of 4 1/2 stars out of 5 and is ranked No. 6 out of 50 app teaching aids.

Formulas Free

Awarded “Best” award from, Formulas Free removes the need to search through your textbook for that one math formula you need in preparation for a calculus quiz. This app is the perfect study aid for high school calculus students. It assists in studying differential equations, derivatives, hyperbolics, graphing, trigonometry, integrals, limits and continuity, matrices and a number of other advanced mathematical areas. The app is simple to navigate and has a 4 1/2 star rating out of a possible 5 stars.

Quick Graph

Awarded 5 out of 5 stars by users, Quick Graph by Colombiamug is a powerful graphic calculator that runs off a multitouch display on the iPad and iPhone. Users can access and edit equations and get mathematical notation images of various coordinate systems that include polar, cartesian, cylindrical and spherical with exceptional speed. The data can be copied and saved or even emailed. This app makes plotting equations easy and incorporates implicit graphs and tracing for advanced user experiences.
