North Carolina is a southern state located on the Atlantic coast of the United States. It borders four other states--Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Virginia. The state has an area of 48,718 square miles.

1 First Flight

The first mechanically propelled airplane flight took place in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. Orville Wright piloted the flight and it lasted 12 seconds. Orville and his brother Wilbur invented the plane that made this historic flight.

2 The Roanoke Colony

Roanoke Island, North Carolina was once home to a colony of 117 English settlers. This group and their settlement was the Roanoke Colony. The leader of the colony, John White, left his people to go to England for supplies in 1587. He returned three years later to find the settlers had departed. Neither John White nor any other Englishman never saw them again.

The state bird of North Carolina is the Cardinal. The state tree is Longleaf Pine, and the state flower is Flowering Dogwood. "Esse Quan Videri" is the state motto. It means "To be rather than to seem."
