How to Customize Your Computer Folder Colors

If you have a hard time distinguishing important folders among the multitude of items residing on your hard drive, change the default color of any folder that you need prioritized. Because Windows 8.1 lacks the functionality required to perform such a task, make use of third-party applications such as Folder Marker Free, Folderico or Folder Colorizer to customize the appearance of individual folders using a range of colors.

1 Folder Marker Free

2 Download Folder Marker Free

Download Folder Marker Free (link in Resources), install the software, and then launch it.

3 Click the Browse button

Click the “Browse” button under the Folder section, and then select a folder from your hard drive.

4 Click the Colors tab under the Folder Icon section

Click the “Colors” tab under the Folder Icon section. Pick a color, and then click “Apply” to change the color of the selected folder. To change the folder back to its default color, right-click the folder, point to "Mark Folder," and then select "Restore Default."

6 Download and install the FolderIco trial version

7 Right-click any folder on your hard drive

Right-click any folder on your hard drive, and then point to “Change Icon” on the context menu.

8 Select a color

Select a color of your choice to change the default color of the folder. To revert back to the default folder color, click “Restore Default” on the "Change Icon" menu. To purchase FolderIco, select the “Buy Now” option on the "Change Icon" menu.

Download and install Folder Colorizer (link in Resources).

11 Right click a folder

Right-click a folder on your hard drive and point to “Colorize.”

12 Select an available color

Select an available color to change the default color of the folder. To change the folder back to its default color, right-click the folder and select "Restore Default Color" on the context menu.
