Viva la volume on your special occasions with the luscious, cascading coif that Lana Del Rey sports as her signature style. This singer-songwriter and fashion-industry darling has a sultry, smoky vibe that is rooted in classic Hollywood and 1950s Americana and it serves her retro-revival hair and wardrobe well. Lana has a team of hair stylists that help her evoke the spirit of bombshell film actress Veronica Lake with her seductive peek-a-boo curls, but you can don this do at home with a whole lot less fuss.
Wash and condition your hair and blow-dry it straight, parting the hair on one side, at the temple.
Squeeze a dab of volumizing serum or cream into your palm and rub it between your hands. Work the cream through your hair by running your hands through from the scalp to the tips of the hair, then brush the hair smooth.
Part the top of the hair in a horseshoe curve running horizontally from temple to temple, then twist it and secure it with a hair clip. Part the second section 1 inch below the first and also secure it with a clip. You have a remaining third section of hair at the nape of the neck.
Brush out the bottom section and mist the hair with heat-protectant spray and let the hair air-dry.
Heat up a wide-barrel curling iron. Take a large 2- to 3-inch-wide section of hair from the main bottom section and twist and wrap the section around the barrel, rolling up and toward the crown so that the curl faces upwards. Wait 15 seconds and slide the curl off the barrel and pin it to the head with a few bobby pins. Repeat this curling process until all of the hair in the main bottom section is curled into individual pinned curls.
Mist the bottom section of hair with curl-setting spray.
Remove the clip from the main middle section of hair. Brush out the section and mist the hair with heat-protectant spray and let the hair air-dry.
Curl and pin 2- to 3-inch-wide sections using the wide-barrel curling iron, rolling away from the crown so that the curls turn under.
Mist the entire middle section of hair with curl-setting spray.
Remove the clip from the top section of hair, brush out the section and mist the hair with heat-protectant spray and let the hair air-dry.
Curl and pin hair sections just as you did the main middle section, rolling away from the crown so that the curls turn under.
Mist the entire top section of hair with curl-setting spray.
Take out all of the pins after five to 10 minutes to release the curls and then brush out the curls slowly to make joined waves, not tight pin curls.
Mist the style with a flexible-hold hairspray.
Do not curl hair too closely to the scalp, or the curling iron may burn you.
Keep your hair pinned for a longer time period if it typically does not hold curl well.
Large hot rollers can also achieve this effect.
