How to Calculate Completion Rates

Completion rates help institutions evaluate overall student engagement.

Completion rate is a term used by educational institutions to track statistics on course completions. It compares course credits attempted versus course credits completed. From these statistics, institutions can calculate the completion rates as a percentage. Educational institutions use this information to evaluate overall student engagement and coursework effectiveness.

Determine the number of students in the educational institution or program.

Calculate the number of credits hours each student signed up for, or attempted, during the school year or period in question.

Add together the credit hours attempted by all students to find the total credit hours attempted.

Determine the total credit hours completed by each student.

Add together the credit hours completed by all students to find the total credit hours completed.

Calculate the completion rate using the following formula: Completion rate = total hours completed/total hours attempted. For example, if the total hours attempted from Step 3 is 3,500 hours and the total hours completed from Step 5 is 2,400, the completion rate = 2,400/3,500 = 0.6857 or 68.57 percent.
