How to Use Vocabulary Words in a Sentence

Keep track of vocabulary information on index cards.

Putting vocabulary words into sentences gives words context, which aids memorization. To use vocabulary words in sentences, first write down the words' definitions, parts of speech and any conjugation irregularities. Then use that information to write simple sentences. Reviewing these sentences daily will solidify your understanding of those words.

Write each vocabulary word on an index card. Leave space on the card for the word's definition, part of speech and conjugation.

Look up each word in a dictionary. Write the definition next to the word. Next write down the part of speech of each word. For example, write "verb" if the word is "run" or write "adverb" if the word is "quickly." Lastly, write down the word's conjugation and any irregularities. For example, if the word's form changes in the past tense, make a note of it.

Use the information on your index cards to write sentences. Use the definition to put the word in the right context, and the part of speech to put the word in the correct position. Make sure you're using the correct conjugation. If your word has irregular conjugations, make one sentence with each conjugation. Construct simple sentences that are easy to remember and express the word's meaning clearly.

Review your sentences daily, speaking them out loud to practice pronunciation and writing them down to memorize spelling. Continue practicing your vocabulary words until you are confident you have memorized them.
