How to Keep Annoying Neighbors Out of My Yard

You don't need a fence to keep your neighbor out of your yard.

Annoying neighbors come in different shapes and types. You might have a nosy neighbor who stands in your yard asking questions about things that are none of her business, and sharing gossip about others living on your street. Another type of annoying neighbor is the one who helps himself to your tools, and whatever else you keep in your shed, without asking. Other annoying neighbors allow their dogs or children to roam into your yard uninvited. Before you start a feud, try to diffuse the situation by appealing to your neighbor to stay out.

Sit down with your neighbor and have a heart-to-heart talk. Let him know, calmly and rationally, that you'd like him to stay out of your yard. If you are otherwise friendly with your neighbor, try to soften the blow by telling him when he is welcome to come visit you or knock on your door, but make it clear that you do not want him in your yard uninvited.

Acknowledge your neighbor's feelings. She may be hurt that you do not want to participate in neighborhood gossip, or angry that you want her to keep her children out of your yard. Let her know that you understand how she may be feeling, but that it is important to your relationship to settle the matter sooner rather than later.

Get a mediator involved if your neighbor refuses to stay out of your yard. If you have a homeowner's association, contact them for help. If not, a community mediator, a mutual friend or another third party may be able to appeal to your neighbor's sense of etiquette.

Contact the local police if your neighbor refuses to stay off of your property. While this will most likely irreparably damage your relationship, it may be necessary to give you peace of mind and to keep your property safe.
