Authentic leather is pricey, so if you haven’t quite saved up enough for that cute leather handbag, you might opt for pleather instead. Not only is pleather less expensive, it looks and feels almost identical to the real thing. Your pleather purse might need to be cleaned after several uses. While you can’t toss it in your washer and wash it with the rest of your laundry, you can clean up a pleather purse safely.

Fill a bowl with warm water. Add a few drops of gentle dish soap and mix it up well.

Dip a soft cloth into the soapy water. Wring out the cloth so it’s not dripping wet.

Wipe down the entire exterior of the purse with the damp rag. Wipe down the inside lining as well, but check with the manufacturer’s care instructions first; your purse's lining material may or may not stand up to this process.

Wipe over the entire purse with a clean, damp cloth to remove the soap residue. Use another clean cloth to dry the purse.

  • Disinfect your pleather purse, inside and out, periodically; purses can pick up lots of germs from the environment. Mix one part chlorine bleach and five parts water and use a rag to wipe down the purse. Always test the bleach in an inconspicuous spot on the purse first to check for any color changes.
