How to Build a Pyramid Out of Wood
Pyramids were used by ancient Egyptians to bury pharaohs and other important people. The practice was abandoned after the time of the Old Kingdom. Students can build a wooden pyramid as part of a lesson on ancient Egypt.
- Square plywood
- Ruler
- Pen or pencil
- Saw
- Masking tape
- Wood glue
- Spray glue
- Sand
1 Building a Model Pyramid
Determine the size of the pyramid before choosing the plywood. Choose two plywood squares of the same size, and take note of their combined weight; the finished pyramid may become heavy after construction. Use the ruler to draw a straight line diagonally across one piece of plywood. Draw a second diagonal line to create an X. Use the saw to cut along the lines to create four triangles of the same shape.
Use the second piece of plywood for the base of the pyramid. Place three of the triangles with their long sides on the base to create three sides of the pyramid. Hold in place with masking tape on the inside of the structure.
Use wood glue along the horizontal surfaces of the base to glue three of the sides to the base on the inside of the model. Glue the vertical seams together from the inside as well. Allow the glue to dry completely.
Place a line of wood glue along the remaining sides and hold the final side in place for a few moments to set. Allow glue to dry completely before continuing.
Cover the pyramid with spray glue, following the directions on the can. Pour sand over the pyramid while the spray glue is sticky. A thin layer of sand should stick to the model, giving it the appearance of being made from sandstone.
- Place the pyramid on newspaper or another protective surface before pouring the sand to reduce the clean-up.
