What Is "-|5|" on Math Homework?

Transcript

Hi, my name is Stefan. Today, I'm going to be speaking on what is minus the absolute value of 5 in math homework. Now here's the display of what this looks like minus the absolute value of 5. When you speak of the absolute value the absolute value deals with the distance from 0. These two bars means absolute value, absolute value of 5 in this case. Now we know that on a number line if we have 0, 5 over here and -5, these two both have the same distance from 0 so the absolute value of 5 is equivalent to the absolute value of -5 but in this case you could call this minus the absolute value of 5. So in this case, minus the absolute value of 5 is equivalent to -5 because you take the absolute value first then you put the negative in there. So there's your answer.
