How to Divide for Beginners
Transcript
Hi, I'm Charlie Kasov, and this is how to divide for beginners. Now when you are beginning to learn to divide you want to learn long division but you also want to learn the notation. So if we have 12 divided by 3 for example, we would write that as 3 goes into 12 in long division. The division sign is kind of like a parentheses with a line on the top and you put the 3, the smaller number being divided at least and then the number that you are dividing underneath the division sign. So we have 3 goes into 12. Now the way we solve this is we say 3 goes into 1 but it doesn't go into 1, right? It's too big. So we put a 0 up here. Then 3 goes into 12, not 2, we're not just going to skip down the digits but we're going to take apart the largest digit then the next 2, then the next 3 and so on depending on the number. So 3 goes into 12 well we have to count, 3, 6, 9, 12 so 4 times. And, that's it, 3 goes into 12, 4 times. If we did 3 into 120, we'd say 3 goes into 1, 0 times, 3 goes into 12 we said 4 times and then that's it, we say 12, okay we're going to subtract what exactly it goes in. And we get 0, 0 bring down the 0, 3 goes into 0, 0 times and that's 40.
