Adding a negative number with a positive number will require you to do some light subtraction. Add a negative number with a positive number with help from a learning specialist with a master's degree in general and special education in this free video clip.
Hi, I'm Racquel Ward, learning specialist. Today, I'm going to show you how to add positive and negative numbers. We have two numbers with different values, a positive value and a negative value. Step one is to subtract the smaller number from the larger number. So, if we subtract two from eight, it gives us six. Step two is to use the sign of the larger number, and eight has a negative sign, which gives us negative six. If you want to conceptually understand how to add a positive and negative number, the first thing you wanna do is visualize, or draw, a number line. Look at negative eight. We're adding two, which means we're moving to the right because we're adding a positive value, giving us negative six.
