Types Of Ministries

A ministry is a way to serve your church and community. The most well-known type of ministry is serving as a pastor, but there are many other ministry opportunities for people. You can use your skills and passions to find a type of ministry that fits your personality to get involved in your church community and strengthen your faith.

Hospitality Ministries

Hospitality ministries are ministries that take care of the needs of the church itself. They offer a wide variety of opportunities for people, including organizing and executing potlucks, making bulletins, and working in the church office. These are the most common ministries for people to get involved with in their churches since they usually don't require special training or education.

Teaching Ministries

Teaching ministries are those that preach and teach. They include pastors, Sunday school teachers, and religious education directors. Youth groups and Bible studies are teaching ministries, as well. Within the church, teaching ministers are directly responsible for the faith formation of the congregants.

Outreach Ministries

Outreach ministries are those that minister to a church's community or to the world. The most well-known type of outreach ministers are missionaries who travel the world to preach. Outreach ministries also include soup kitchens, food pantries, and Habitat for Humanity. These ministries are good for people who want to make a difference in their communities and in the world, and for people who are outgoing and friendly.

Music Ministries

Music ministries are those that use music to worship and preach. They include vocal and hand bell choirs, praise bands, and piano or organ playing for weekly services. Music ministries also organize special programs for churches, such as Christmas pageants. Most of these ministry opportunities are volunteer positions, and only require a love of music to participate.

Counseling Ministries

Counseling ministries are those that minister to a person's emotional or mental health, in addition to their spirituality. Therapists, counselors, and spiritual directors fall under this category. Many counseling ministry opportunities require additional training or education. They can range from mentors to counseling sessions with licensed therapists.
