On the Tumblr platform, the banner image at the top of the blog’s main page is known as the Header image. You can create a custom banner for your Tumblr blog, then apply the header image to your theme. The image must be 10MB or smaller, and must be a JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG file. You can use an animated GIF, but the image must be under 1MB in size. Most blog themes, including the default Tumblr theme Redux, support header images up to 500 pixels wide. If your image exceeds 500 pixels, the platform automatically resizes it to fit the theme.
Create a header image in an image editing application, such as Windows Paint, Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. You can create a banner from scratch, modify a photo or scale and resize your company’s logo to use as your Tumblr header image. Ensure that your header image complies with Tumblr image standards (see Resources). Save the image as JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG file.
Log in to your Tumblr dashboard and open the blog you wish to modify.
Click the “Customize” option in the right sidebar to open the theme for editing.
Click the “Upload” button in the Header section to open a file dialog box. Browse to and click the banner image, then click “Open” to upload the image. Once the image finishes uploading, the file name appears next to the Header label in the Customize menu.
Click the “Save” button to save the header image, then close the theme editor.
- Note that if you upload an animated GIF larger than 1MB, the animation won’t play.
