How to Draw Bubble Letters

Though their origins can be tough to trace, bubble letters gained popularity in the 1980s as one of the most popular writing styles employed by graffiti artists. Since then, the style has been widely used in a variety of ways. By utilizing bubble letters, you can inject fun and personality into your writings and art.

What are Bubble Letters?

Bubble letters are a font or writing style that gives letters a soft, rounded look. Instead of sharp angles, the letters have curvy, smooth corners and are typically characterized by their resemblance to balloons. Due to its proliferation in graffiti art, this style of writing became very popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Bubble letters are also used in store signs, on product packaging, on restaurant menus, in animation and in art.

How to Draw Bubble Letters

When drawing bubble letters, the key is inflating the shape of the letter and rounding its edges while still making sure that the letter remains clearly legible. Learning to write in bubble letters can be mastered by practicing the following steps.

  1. In pencil, lightly print the word you want to turn into bubble letters. Be sure to leave more space between the letters than you normally would.
  2. Draw round baguette-shaped ovals around each of the lines of your letter, positioning them so the lines that you printed in pencil in step 1 are at the center of your oval. This is the basis for your bubble letter.
  3. Go around the outside of the bubbles you have added with a darker pencil or pen. Connect the circles so that when you're done, you have the outline of your bubble letter.
  4. Erase any of the pencil lines inside of the bubble letter, leaving only the bubble shape of the letter visible.
  5. Go over the outside again with a thick marker.
  6. Now that you know the shape that your bubble letters will take, try to redraw them yourself freehand.
  7. Do the whole alphabet for practice.
