How to Be Invincible. The ability of human beings to rise above the odds, to adapt to new environments and to learn from mistakes in a meaningful way is what sets us apart as a species. Our unique desire to be truly invincible is what marks our quest to attain a higher state of being. Although everyone has a different idea of what it takes to achieve this state, there are certain steps we can take to help us reach it.

Begin by seeking self-knowledge. As the great philosopher Kahlil Gibran writes, "Self is a sea boundless and measureless." To begin the quest for true invincibility, one must go on a deep inner journey. One must evaluate one's life, celebrating all the failures and the successes.

Love yourself and believe yourself to be beautiful and whole. So much of what we read every day in the media tells us that we need to be different, that we need to wear different clothes, be a different weight or height or be something we are not. To be invincible, we must look at ourselves without the attitudes of the media telling us what we should see and celebrate our uniqueness.

Rediscover your innocence. Remember what it was life to be unconcerned about what others thought of you. Go back to that time of innocence in your mind and feel free to be that person, enjoying the happiness of small things and not feeling guilty about your imperfections.

Have the courage to follow your dreams, to live with conviction. Author Tom Wolfe wrote "The Right Stuff," an extraordinary book dealing exclusively with the subject of courage, of what constitutes the right stuff that makes some men strong enough to go higher than others (all the way to the stars in the case of the astronauts in Wolfe's book).

Read the great books, the classics, the heroic epics. What better way to become your own hero than to read about the heroes of yore to see what made these men and women stand apart from the rest? Start with such noble works as "Odysseus," "Hamlet," "Antigone" and "Oedipus Rex."

Rise above fear. Look at life as a series of obstacles to be conquered. Realize that failure is always a possibility, but it should not stop you from trying to have the courage to become the hero of your own life, to become invincible.
