Certification in A+ is offered by CompTIA. It's a popular and widely accepted certification that certifies a computer technician's expert knowledge of hardware and software. People with little or no experience in technical support can take the tests as a way to gain entry to the field. Certification requires passing two exams -- one that covers essentials and a second that is geared toward a specific support role.

Step 1

Get some hands-on experience working with PC hardware, operating systems (DOS and Windows) and basic networking. The A+ exam does not require experience, but the exams are very practical. Familiarity with computers is helpful.

Step 2

Find training materials or classes. CompTIA's website lists approved training courses. Also find other free sample A+ exam questions online.

Step 3

Decide which test to take. A+ certification requires two exams: A+ Essentials, plus another test geared toward a specific technical role -- IT technician, Remote Support Technician and Depot Technician. Read more about each test on the CompTIA website. Enter your name and email address to get a copy of the A+ objectives document.

Step 4

Locate a testing center. The CompTIA A+ exam is given at Pearson VUE testing facilities. Visit the Pearson VUE website or the CompTIA website to find a testing center in your area.

Step 5

Purchase a voucher from CompTIA. The test must be taken before the voucher expires.

Step 6

Register to take the test.
