Thick, voluminous lashes are the polishing touch to professional looking makeup. Although it may appear some women are naturally born with long, thick lashes, they more often achieve the effect with careful application of mascara. Achieving this look requires selecting the proper beauty products and applying them in the proper order. Even women with thin or sparse lashes can achieve a dramatic transformation that enhances both daytime and evening looks.

  • Metal eyelash curler
  • Hot water
  • Towel
  • Eyeliner
  • Eyelash primer
  • Lengthening or thickening mascara
  • Loose translucent powder
  • Makeup brush

1 Curl the Lashes

2 Turn on a hot water faucet

Turn on a hot water faucet and let it run for five to ten seconds. Hold the eyelash curler under the stream of hot water for approximately 20 seconds to allow the metal to heat up. Turn off the water and dry the eyelash curler quickly on a towel.

3 Place the two bars of the eyelash curler

Place the two bars of the eyelash curler over and under the upper lashes of your left eye. Move it as close to your eyelid as possible without touching it. Squeeze the eyelash curler shut and hold it for five seconds.

4 Open the curler

Open the curler and move it out slightly until it reaches the middle of your lashes. Squeeze the curler shut and hold for another five seconds.

5 Remove the eyelash curler

Remove the eyelash curler and repeat the process on the right eyelashes.

6 Apply Eyeliner and Mascara

7 Draw a thin

Draw a thin line of eyeliner to the eyelid as close to the lashline as possible. Work the eyeliner down in between the base of the lashes to make them appear thicker.

8 Remove the wand from an eyelash primer

Remove the wand from an eyelash primer. Place the wand at the base of your upper eyelashes and apply a light coat to the underside of your lashes from base to tip. Repeat the application process on your bottom lashes and then on your other eye.

9 Made to thicken lashes

Purchase mascara specifically made to thicken lashes. According to Totalbeauty, look for the following ingredients that help thicken and lengthen: soy protein, acrylates copolymer, panthenol, pantethine, and pro vitamin B-5. Opt for a shade that is close your natural lash color if you want a natural look. For a more dramatic looks, choose black mascara.

10 Open the mascara

Open the mascara and pull the wand out. Place the wand at the base of upper left eyelashes and wiggle it until the lashes fall between the bristles. Continue wiggling the wand until you reach the end of your lashes. Repeat the process on your right eye.

11 Place the wand

Place the wand at the base of the lower lashes on your left eye. Wiggle it to get in between the lashes and pull it through to the ends. Repeat the process on your right eye.

12 Open a container

Open a container of loose translucent power. Dip a makeup brush into the powder and the shake off the excess. Dust the top of your lashes with the powder, being careful not to get it in your eyes.

13 Wait 60 to 90 seconds

Wait 60 to 90 seconds and apply a second coat of the lengthening mascara to all eyelashes.

  • Allow each layer of mascara to dry completely before applying the next, or clumps will form.
