Writing is both a talent and a skill that can be improved upon through a focused education. Various colleges specialize in training students how to write their own work as well as to edit the work of others. If you are interested in a career as a writer or editor, consider an education at one of these colleges or at another offering degrees in creative and non-fiction writing as well as communication and journalism.

Columbia University

A degree from this prestigious private university in English, journalism or communication should prepare you for a career as an editor or writer. The school is particularly known for its preparation in journalism; however students may also study poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction and literary publishing. Degrees are offered in creative writing as well as literature. A number of prominent authors have graduated or taught at Columbia University including J.D. Salinger, Richard Yates, Bharati Mukherjee and Pearl S. Buck.

University of Arizona

The University of Arizona is a large university with nearly 40,000 students. Its creative writing program within the department of English at the school prepares students for careers in writing and editing. Fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction are studied and bachelor of arts degrees are offered in creative writing as well as English and literature with minors in creative writing. The program is a member of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

Colorado College

A small, private liberal arts college, Colorado College offers students interested in pursuing careers as writers and editors a unique educational experience through a program within its English department. Students take one principal course at a time in small classes typically composed of eight students. A creative writing track within the English department allows students to study literature from a variety of genres and cultures. Students may specialize in poetry or fiction and must complete more course hours that English-only majors. Students review each other’s work, collaborate on projects and present writing pieces near the end of their course of study at the college.

Emory University

Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia offers students the ability to earn degrees in creative writing within the department of English. At least four required courses for the degree are writing workshops, giving students an emphasis on practical application of their knowledge and development of their writing skills. Each semester, the program brings in notable authors to interact with program students through readings. Yearly summer writing workshops and writing festivals are also held at the university.
