To become an approved educational provider of Nursing Continuing Education Units (CEU's), a program can apply with the nursing board for the state or with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Before a nurse may renew her license, many states require continuing education units (CEU's) from an approved educational provider. Due to differing requirements in each state, a separate application process exists for each state that an educational provider plans to serve. Becoming a licensed educational provider through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is one way to certify a program that multiple states will accept.
Visit the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) website and mouse over the "Accreditation" drop down menu. From the "Accreditation" menu you can choose to learn more about any step of the application process. Start by choosing "Accreditation Application Process" from the menu. The benefit of credentialing a nursing education program is that ANCC-approved programs are recognized by the state boards of nursing as approved nursing educational programs.
Scroll down to the "Related Resources" section of the "Accreditation Application Process" page and click on the links to download the Word documents. You will need to download both "Accreditation Initial Application Eligibility Form [doc]" and "Provider Application to Submit with Self Study [doc]" in order to proceed with an application for your nursing education program. The application process steps from the ANCC include determining your eligibility, submitting the program application, preparing for the required self-study, submitting written documents, getting ANCC reviewers assigned to review your program and having your self-study peer reviewed. Once reviewed, the ANCC makes the accreditation decision and notifies the program applicant.
Visit the State Board of Nursing website for your state if you would like to pursue individual state accreditation for your nursing education program. Note that state boards accredit organizations that provide nursing education programs rather than individual courses or presentations offered as continuing education units.
