When entering a nursing program you are often asked to write a paper about the philosophy of nursing. The basic premise of this type of paper is to show the instructor that you are capable of doing literature research that backs up your personal philosophy on nursing. Generally this paper requires three to five resources. A way to approach this is through the ethics of nursing and how they apply to your personal beliefs.
Search for nursing articles in medical journals and on the Internet through nursing websites. You need to read at least 10 articles to get a good posture for the paper. Selecting large groups of articles allows you to narrow them down to the required minimum of resources for the paper. Ask the instructor if you can use more references and resources than the required maximum since it will deepen the paper.
Locate approximately five philosophy texts on medical ethics. An Internet search should give several sources, many of which are available free online. Check with local hospitals as they also have nursing and philosophy of nursing texts in their medical libraries.
Examine your information and determine how you are going to word your thesis statement. This is important as it will set the tone for the paper.
Write the paper using your sources to support your belief system. If you have a statement that agrees with your main idea, use it to support your point of view. Do not just state that it supports it though; you need to explain how it supports your view.
Read a few excerpts from philosophers such as John Mill and Thomas Hobbes to acquaint you with the philosophy of ethics. You can do this after you have written the paper so that as edit you can plug these views of moral philosophy and ethics into the paper. This will prove a knowledge of the moral dilemmas often faced by those in the medical field.
