OoVoo is a comprehensive video chat service that covers both desktop and smartphone platforms. To get started with the service, you'll need to sign up for a free account, which can be done from a Windows or Mac computer or from an Android or iOS device using the officially approved apps. OoVoo is also available as a Facebook app, enabling video conversations with your Facebook contacts inside a Web browser.
The ooVoo Windows client requires Windows XP or later to run. The Mac edition requires Lion (OS X 10.7) or later. Both of these desktop clients can be downloaded for free from the official ooVoo website. For the Android and iOS apps, head to the Google Play Store or iTunes App Store respectively: the Android ooVoo app works with devices running Android 2.2 or later while the iOS edition works with devices running 6.0 or later. Each desktop client and mobile app enables you to log in to an existing ooVoo account or set up a new one.
Each ooVoo application works slightly differently but the basics are the same. Once you've signed up or logged in, you can find new friends, view a list of your existing contacts and make calls to other people. For group conversations you can select all of the participants before placing the call or add new members while the call is in progress. Select a single contact and the various communication options appear: video call, audio call and instant message.
All ooVoo clients and apps allow free audio calls, video calls and instant messaging over the Web between connected computers and devices. Up to 12 people can participate in a video chat. The Windows and Mac clients allow you to share your screen with other contacts, while the mobile apps include support for video status messages, one-touch video calling and the ability to store your video clips and images. The Windows client and Android/iOS mobile apps enable you to leave video messages for contacts who are not online.
OoVoo is completely free to use on all platforms. By subscribing to a premium plan you can remove the ads from the software and get priority support -- this costs $29.99 per year or $2.99 per month as of November 2013. Premium account holders can also record up to 1,000 minutes of video calls locally on a Windows PC. In addition you can purchase ooVoo credits for making calls to landline and mobile phones in specific countries across the world. To check current calling rates or to upgrade to a premium account, visit the official ooVoo website.
