Animation and the digital arts combine fine art with technology. As the use of digital media grows, so does the need for talented artists with the skills to turn artistic vision into graphic realities. There are over 350 institutions offering degrees in animation and the digital arts, including many well known universities and colleges. These programs prepare students for a wide range of careers as graphic designers, multimedia artists, animators and web designers.

Arizona State University

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University offers a digital culture program with a concentration in design leading to a bachelor of arts degree. Students study new media, product design, history of design and integrative design approaches. Additional coursework includes animation, media editing, sound engineering, interactive environments, web programming and digital modeling.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida School of Visual Arts and Design offers several programs related to animation and the digital arts, including a bachelor of arts in digital media, with tracks in game design and web design, and a bachelor of fine arts in the emerging media track, with an emphasis on character or experimental animation. Courses are dependent on the chosen track, but offerings include drawing fundamentals, digital video and digital imaging, interactive design, modeling and character animation.

Brigham Young University

Brigham Young University’s College of Fine Arts and Communications offers a bachelor of fine arts in animation training students for success in the animation, live action, special effects and gaming industries. Students take courses in figure drawing, narrative construction, storyboarding, history of animation and various animation techniques, such as hand gestures and shading. Optional courses cover topics such as screenwriting, acting, digital painting and digital media production.

The University of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts offers an interdisciplinary film and digital media program leading to a bachelor of fine arts degree with concentrations in either critical studies or production. The program integrates a wide variety of disciplines including animation, production, writing, producing and business. Students take core courses in media studies, computer programming, modeling and post-production and the business and law of film and new media. Elective courses include video production, film studies, sound art, screenwriting and direction.
