The first time you sign in to your AOL Instant Messaging account using the AIM client, you must enter your username and password. By default, the program checks "Remember Password" under the login form. Once you sign in this way the first time, the program automatically signs you in each subsequent time you launch the program, even if you sign out. You must change your sign-in settings to prevent AIM from automatically signing you in to the account each time.

Launch AIM on your computer and allow the program to automatically sign in to the default account.

Click "File" in the main menu, and then select "Sign Out" from the drop-down menu.

Uncheck the box next to "Remember Password." Delete the password and the username displayed in the fields by backspacing over them. You must manually enter your username and password and then click the "Sign In" button each time you want to sign in to your AIM account going forward.

Click "File" in the main menu and select "Exit" to exit out of AIM and save your preferences.

  • If you forget your account password, you can click the "Forgot Password" link on the sign-in screen to create a new one.
