Science Concepts for Kids

Expand the minds of budding scientists by creating a lesson plan around a few science concepts. From anatomy to zoology, a wide range of topics, broken down into manageable portions, can turn into workable lesson modules. Base other school subjects around a science theme to broaden the knowledge base for kids. Use science themes for activities, homework and other exercises to get children to interact and actively participate in learning.

Basic Science Terms

Teach kids basic terms and phrases commonly used in all sciences. The National Center for Improving Science Education recommends a list of concepts to explain to young children before embarking on a scientific learning journey. Teach kids about looking for the "cause and effect" of science methods, or have them look for "diversity" or "variation" when observing relationships between organisms and objects. Explain how a scientific model works to represent other things, or how a hypothesis proposes an idea for an experiment.

Science Careers

Delve into various science subjects by examining what different scientists do for their careers. Get hands-on with students by having them grow seedlings in a container to show the basics of a botanist's career. Use pictures and photos of different weather patterns to explain the work of a meteorologist. Visit an aquarium to explain how marine biologists work to learn about plant and animal life in the water. Pick one career and explore its different aspects through reading, history and math subjects to integrate the lesson.

Habitats

Focus studies around specific habitats around the world. Explore the photosynthesis process in plant life in a rain forest or examine animal behaviors in desert regions. Create a lesson comparing and contrasting the different species of birds, amphibians or mammals. Assign each child a region of one habitat to explore on their own to learn more about nature. Have kids demonstrate their knowledge to the entire classroom with a book report, a poster board or other display. Use the information they have gathered to explore the minutia of plant and animal life.

Agriculture

Talk about agricultural science with kids. Create lessons that show the cycle of growing crops and compare the various growth stages. Work with kids to research the definition of pesticides and how they protect crops. Use examples of everyday food such as corn, soybeans and rice to examine the stages of farming production. Get into the details of which vitamins, minerals and fibers make up plants.
