Often, mascots are chosen that embody physical, mental or emotional traits that present a school and its students in a positive light. Sometimes mascots are selected that are indigenous or representative of the geographical area that the school is located in. In some instances, schools choose mascots that are normally seen in a negative light, like devils, phantoms, or criminals, to represent toughness. For instance, as of 2011, Max Preps, a CBS Sports website, says there are more than 100 high schools in the U.S. that use red devils as their mascots.
Washington
Located in Yakima, Washington, East Valley High School is part of the East Valley School District 90 and offers seven interscholastic athletic programs, including football, cross country and boys and girls basketball. Each of the Red Devils' teams compete in the Central Washington Athletic Conference with nine other schools, including Grandview High, Quincy High and Ephrata High. EVHS offers several extracurricular activities besides sports, including drama club, an honor society and Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
North Carolina
Located in Red Springs, North Carolina, the Red Springs High School Red Devils field 20 interscholastic athletic teams, including boys and girls track and field, football, baseball, cheer, and wrestling. Nearly half of the school's enrollment is comprised of Native American students, while more than a third are African-American. The school offers several extracurricular programs or clubs, including Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Native American Student Association.
Illinois
Located 87 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, in Sesser, Illinois, the Sesser-Valier High School Red Devils compete in the Black Diamond Conference with nine other schools, including Hamilton County High, Johnston City High, and Elverado-Trico High. The school offers nine sports programs, including football, girl's volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and baseball. The school offers several extracurricular organizations, including the National Honor Society, band, drama and student council.
Utah
Springville High School is located in Springville, Utah, approximately 50 miles south of Salt Lake City and is part of the Nebo Unified School District. The Red Devils field 16 athletic teams, including football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis and boys and girls golf. SHS competes in the Utah High School Activities Association's Region VIII against several local schools, including Spanish Fork High, Maple Mountain High and Payson High. Scott Mitchell, former Red Devil, University of Utah and NFL quarterback, has been the Red Devils' head football coach since 2008 and led the school to its only state championship in 1985.
