How to Make Uploaded YouTube Videos Private Automatically

YouTube provides options on your Upload screen to set video uploads automatically to your privacy level. As an alternative, the Video Manager includes Channel Settings that enable you to update the default settings, such as changing "Public" to "Private." The Private option includes your custom list, such as "Your Circles" or "Team Members," for sharing your videos with your preferred audience.

1 Upload Screen

2 Click the Upload button

Click the "Upload" button near the Search bar to open the Select Files to Upload screen.

3 Click the Privacy field

Click the "Privacy" field to open the drop-down list, and then select "Private" to bring up the Share To section.

4 Click the +Add names

Click the "+Add names, circles, or email addresses" field in the Share To section to open the scrolling drop-down list. Select one or more options: "Your circles," "Extended circles," "Following," "Customers," "VIPs" or "Team members."

6 Click the Upload arrow button

Click the "Upload" arrow button to open the drop-down list, and then select "Video Manager" to open the Uploads page and the sidebar.

7 Click Channel Settings

Click "Channel Settings" in the sidebar to expand the section, and then select "Defaults" to open the Upload Defaults page. This page displays this message: "Set defaults below for future uploads. These settings can be overridden on individual videos."

8 Click the Privacy arrow button

Click the "Privacy" arrow button to open the drop-down list, and then select "Private."

9 Click Save to update this default setting

Click "Save" to update this default setting.

  • The Upload button is actually two buttons. Click the "Upload" button to open the Select Files to Upload screen. Click the arrow button beside the "Upload" button to open the drop-down list with the Video Manager option.
  • To make previously uploaded individual videos private, click the "Upload" arrow button, and then select "Video Manager." Click "Uploads" in the sidebar to display your list of video thumbnails. Click to tick the check box for the preferred video. Click the "Edit" button and select "Info and Settings" on the drop-down list to display your video. Click the "Basic Info" tab, click the field in the Privacy Settings section to open the drop-down list and then select "Private." A tiny icon displays a white, closed lock on a blue square. Click "Save Changes."
  • To unlist all your uploaded videos from public view, but enable anyone who has your URL links to view your videos, click "Video Manager" to open your list. Click to add a tick in the check for "Actions," click the "Actions" button and select "Unlisted" in the Privacy section on the drop-down list. An icon displays a white, opened lock on a blue square. "Click "Save Changes."
