Virginia offers students a list of colleges and universities to choose for a college education. Students who have a GED face the difficulty of finding a college or university that will accept their degree before applying to a school. There are several options available to students who have a GED and would like to continue their education in Virginia.

Christendom College

Christendom College is a Roman Catholic College located in Front Royal, Virginia. The school opened in 1977 and focuses on Christian education and values while educating students. As of 2011, students who have a GED are welcome to apply to the college. Each student must complete an application and have their GED score results mailed directly to the college. You must also submit three essays based on the questions listed on the Christendom College admissions page. The application fee at Christendom College is $25 as of 2011 and is non-refundable.

Virginia State University

Virginia State University is located in Petersburg, Virginia, and is a historically black college and university. Students with a GED must have their scores submitted to the college office of admissions directly. You must also submit two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, SAT or ACT scores and the non-refundable application fee. As of 2011, the application fee to Virginia State University is $25. SAT or ACT test scores are required for all applicants.

Ferrum College

Ferrum College was founded in 1913 near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Ferrum, Virginia. The college is close to major cities like Roanoke, Virginia, and Greensboro, North Carolina. Freshmen wishing to apply with a GED must submit either their equivalency certification or proof of GED to the Ferrum Office of Admissions. Future students must also submit an application and the associated fee. The application fee for Ferrum is $25 as of 2011. SAT or ACT scores must be submitted to the college directly.

University of Virginia at Wise

The University of Virginia at Wise is a public, liberal arts, four-year college in Wise, Virginia. The school is in southwest Virginia and is within an hour's drive of the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee and Virginia, amidst the Appalachian Mountains. The school offers 29 majors, 29 minors, seven pre-professional programs and 23 teaching licensures. GED applicants must submit an application, the $25 application fee as of 2011, proof of GED and SAT or ACT test scores to the office of admissions directly. The application fee for the school is non-refundable.

Community Colleges

All of the Virginia community colleges accept a GED as a form of suitable high school completion. In addition, most community colleges do not require that you complete the ACT or SAT to apply. To apply for community college you must provide an official copy of your GED transcripts to the admissions office of the community college you would like to attend. Many community colleges have transfer programs with four-year colleges and universities. You can check with the community college counselors for all your transferring options.
