Southern California, a region that includes the Los Angeles, Riverside-San Bernardino, San Diego, Oxnard-Thousand Oaks and El Centro metropolitan areas, is home to a number of junior colleges that offer surgical technician programs in which students are exposed to classroom instructions and hands-on clinical demonstrations. Surgical technicians prepare instruments for surgery and set up equipment and test it before operations. During operations, surgical technicians hand surgeons instruments and other supplies.

MiraCosta College

MiraCosta College in San Diego, California offers two educational programs in surgical technology. The southern California junior college offers surgical technology programs resulting in either a certificate of completion or an associate's degree. To receive a certificate of completion, students must complete 38 study units, including courses in principles of surgical technology, surgical patient care concepts, and clinical practice for surgical technology. Students who complete all of the courses in the surgical technology certificate program in addition to satisfying the junior college's associate degree requirements will be awarded an associate degree in surgical technology. Students can earn an associate degree by completing 18 study units in their chosen major. Students must maintain a "C" grade-point average in all courses to remain in the surgical technology programs.

Southwestern College

There is a surgical technology program at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California. The program dates back to 1987 and is sponsored by the San Diego County Regional Occupations Program. The surgical technology program requires students to take between 35 and 36 study units. However, the units earned for completion of the program cannot be applied to an associate's degree at the school. The required courses for the surgical technician program include an introduction to surgical technology, advanced operating room techniques, and general microbiology. Upon completion of the program, students must take the California Surgical Technology Certification Examination to be eligibe to work as a certified surgical technician.

Everest College

Everest College, located in Reseda, California, has a surgical technologist program that focuses on five areas of surgical technology. The program trains students on properly preventing infections, recognizing surgical instruments and supplies, positioning patients, using equipment in the operating room, and functioning on an operating team. After completing the program, students must take and pass the state surgical technology examination to become eligible to work in the field.
