It can be difficult to live in an area where you don't speak the local language. While language courses can often be expensive, there are multiple free options for learning a new language, including English. In Irvine, California, local resources are available, as well as Internet options that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. It may be a good idea to utilize more than one free language learning resource in order to gain a broader understanding.

Sign up for free English courses through the South Coast Literacy Council by visiting the council's website. SCLC offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) courses throughout Orange County, including five locations in Irvine.

Download English courses from iTunes U, a service offered by iTunes connecting courses and instructive podcasts to users around the world. Examples of free English lessons on iTunes U include those offered by Harrisburg Area Community College in Harrisburg, Pa. Others can be found by searching "English" or "ESL" in the iTunes U section of the iTunes Store. Simply open your iTunes application and click on the "iTunes Store" button in the left-hand navigation bar, then click the "iTunes U" button at the top of the window.

Search for a language partner on Craigslist or place an ad of your own in the "Community" or "Services" section of Orange County Craigslist. Language partner or language exchange relationships generally consist of two or more people who meet up at a determined time and location to exchange knowledge of their respective native languages and practice conversational skills with one another.
