Enhance the appearance of your Tumblr blog to create a unique experience for your visitors. Use Tumblr's Customize page to make changes to your blog's theme, appearance and custom HTML code. Decorate your blog by inserting a custom background into your theme's HTML code. You can use images you found on the Web as the background for your blog. Use your theme's unique appearance settings to tweak the look and feel of your blog. Tumblr provides a preview of your blog for you to review before saving changes.

Tumblr Customize Page

To customize the appearance of Tumblr blog, open the Customize page. Log in to Tumblr on the Web. If necessary, click the drop-down arrow at the top of your Tumblr Dashboard's right sidebar and then select your blog. Click the "Customize" button on the right sidebar to open your blog's Customize page. Alternatively, you can navigate to your Tumblr blog's website and then click the "Customize" button at the top right of your blog.

Select Your Custom Theme

Open the Customize page and then click the "Browse Themes" button on the left sidebar. Click the drop-down arrow next to "All Themes" and then select a filter. For example, select "Free Themes." Scroll down the left sidebar to view the available themes based on your filter, and then click on a theme to display a preview of the theme on your blog to the right. Click the "Use" button at the top of the left sidebar to apply the theme to your blog. When you change your blog's theme, any custom HTML and CSS elements are removed.

Customize Your Theme's Appearance

Change the appearance of your blog's theme using the Appearance settings found on your Tumblr's Customize page. Depending on the theme you are using, a wide variety of settings may be found under Appearance, such as font size, color and style. Many themes provide you with settings to change the appearance of your posts, such as Show Tags, Include Note Count and Add Permalinks. Click the "Save" button at the top of the left sidebar to save changes you've made to your blog's appearance settings.

Customize Your Background

Click the "Edit HTML" link on your Customize page. Press "Ctrl-F" and then type "" without the quotes. Insert a new line before the tag and then paste the following code:

body { background-image:url('IMAGE_URL_HERE'); background-repeat:no-repeat; }

Replace IMAGE_URL_HERE with the image URL of an image on the Web you want to use as your background. Click the "Update Preview" button, and then click the "Save" button to save changes to your theme.
