Coupons are one of the most commonly used sales promotions by manufacturers and retailers trying to induce immediate business from customers. Most coupons have expiration dates. The expiration date is the last opportunity for you to redeem the coupon. If a coupon expires on September 30, you can use the coupon up until midnight on the 30th.

As point-of-sale technology has evolved, retailers scan most coupons. If the coupon has expired and is invalid, the scanner rejects the redemption attempt. On manufacturer-sponsored promotions, the retailer typically receives the coupon and redeems it after the purchase for credit. If the coupon is expired when accepted, the retailer is usually out the money because it won't get credit from the manufacturer.
