Tablet devices often include a built-in front-facing camera designed to be used as a webcam, and some apps enable the front-facing camera to act as a webcam for a computer. The apps need to be configured on both the tablet device and the computer to work: both iOS and Android tablets feature apps that convert the device into a webcam. These apps can help you in a pinch when you need to use a webcam on a computer, but don't have a dedicated webcam on hand.

10 Install the IP Webcam app on the Android tablet

Install the IP Webcam app on the Android tablet through the Google Play store.

11 Install the IP Camera Adapter program

Install the IP Camera Adapter program on the PC from the IP-Webcam website.

12 Launch the IP Webcam app

Launch the IP Webcam app on the Android device and set the configuration options to match your use situation. For example, the orientation should be set to landscape or portrait mode depending on how the tablet is positioned and framing the video feed.

13 Tap the Start server button

Tap the "Start server" button in the IP Webcam app window and tap the "How to connect" button to get the Android device's broadcast information. Select the "Wi-Fi" option if prompted to avoid streaming over a cellular network and incurring substantial data use.

14 Open the IP Camera Adapter program

Open the IP Camera Adapter program on the PC and enter the Web address displayed on the Tablet's screen in the "Camera Feed URL" field.

15 Click the Autodetect button and OK button in the IP Camera Adapter program and in the IP Camera Adapter

Click the "Autodetect" button and "OK" button in the IP Camera Adapter program to sync the devices. The computer will use the tablet's video feed like a dedicated plug-and-play webcam device.

  • IP Webcam is intended to run over Wi-Fi and can chew up gigabytes of data use each hour the app is broadcasting over the cellular network.
  • The EpocCam app will fail to connect the PC and iPad if the Bonjour Service is not running on the computer: reinstalling Bonjour should fix the problem. Further, UPP port 5353 and TCP port 5055 need to be opened on the Wi-Fi router for EpocCam to work.
  • If the IP Camera Adapter program fails to sync with the Android tablet URL, close and reopen the program to clear possible conflicts. The IP Camera Adapter program must be configured every time the tablet starts a new stream.
