Many men and women fought in World War II to ensure a better life for future generations, including their own. A number of organizations sponsor scholarships to honor the sacrifice of World War II veterans who fought against the Axis powers. These scholarships are sometimes given to grandchildren of World War II veterans to honor the legacy of the WWII vets.

Navy League of the United States

The Navy League of the United States offers scholarships to honor the sacrifices of war veterans, including those who fought in World War II. One such scholarship, the John J. Schiff, Sr. Scholarship, is awarded to graduating high school students who will be attending an accredited college or university the following year. At the time of publication, awardees receive a one-time award of $10,000. Applicants must be either a child or direct descendant of a war veteran and they must also demonstrate financial need. To apply, those interested must register on the scholarship website and submit the information electronically, including a specified essay and letter of reference.

AMVETS National Scholarship

AMVETS is a volunteer-led organization focused on assisting veterans and their children. It sponsors an annual scholarship for graduating seniors who are grandchildren of U.S. veterans, including veterans of World War II. Applicants must show financial need, academic promise and merit. In addition, they must submit a complete application and an essay. Only the first 200 individuals submitting complete applications will be considered. At the time of publication, six awardees receive $4,000, and one awardee receives $1,000.

Applicants must submit their academic records, school and community involvement, demonstrate financial need and submit a 500-word essay.
