Professionals in the behavioral and social sciences may use a number of written resources, including manuscripts, when writing their papers. The sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association offers format and style guidelines for these writers. Citation information is included for both published and unpublished works.
When including information from an unpublished manuscript, put a citation within parentheses. Insert the author's last name, a comma and the year it was completed. When there are two authors, separate the names with an ampersand, "&". Use commas to separate the names of three or more authors, and include an ampersand before the last name. If the author's name is identified in the text, omit it from the parentheses.
If a source is cited in text, include it on the References page. Begin with the last name of the author, a comma and initials. If there is more than one author, separate names by commas and insert an ampersand before the last name. Add a period. Put the year of completion within parentheses. Add a period. Put the italicized name of the manuscript in sentence case and follow with a period. Next, indicate the status of the manuscript: "Unpublished manuscript," "Manuscript submitted for publication" or "Manuscript in preparation" without quotation marks. Finish with a period, unless the author is doing this work for a university position. In that case, use a comma and add the institutional department, a comma, the name of the institution, a comma, and its location. End with a period. For example: Doe, J., & Smith, A. (2012). A study on the difficulty of getting manuscripts published. Unpublished manuscript, Department of Sociology, The Top University, New York.
