Carlow University, located in Pittsburgh, PA, has been serving students since 1929; formerly known as Mount Mercy College and then as Carlow College, the school gained university status in 2004. Originally founded by the Sisters of Mercy, Carlow University's mission is to provide a Catholic, women-centered education to all students. Carlow's graduate programs are offered with flexible class hours, including online and evening classes.
General Admissions Requirements
Students applying to any of the graduate programs at Carlow University must have an accumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. Prospective students must also complete and return their applications on time and demonstrate high level writing skills. They must have completed any necessary prerequisites as determined by the specific program to which they are applying, as well.
Personal Essay Requirements
Graduate applicants must submit a typed, double-spaced essay totaling about 300 words. According to the university, topics to cover include your short- and long-term goals, your specific reasons for seeking graduate studies in your chosen field, your personal strengths and skills you would bring to the graduate program and your future plans for using your graduate degree.
Applicants must submit an up-to-date resume or curriculum vitae detailing their previous education, professional experiences, honors received, public service activities, relevant research projects and membership in professional organizations.
Letters of Recommendation
Graduate applicants must seek two letters of recommendation to be submitted directly to Carlow's Graduate Admissions office. Recommendation letters should highlight the academic, professional and personal qualities that make you a good Carlow Univeristy graduate studies candidate. At least one letter of recommendation should highlight your leadership qualities and abilities as well as your ability to complete graduate-level work.
Official Transcript Requirements
Carlow University requires graduate studies applicants to provide official transcripts from the regionally accredited institute where they earned their undergraduate degree or began taking graduate classes. These official transcripts must be in sealed envelopes, sent directly to Carlow's Graduate Admissions office from the school where the credits were earned.
International Student Requirements
In addition to fulfilling the other application requirements, international students must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language to Carlow's Center for Global Learning to ensure they have the English language skills necessary to succeed in graduate school.
In some cases, a personal interview may be scheduled with the graduate school applicant. Interviews are scheduled as necessary after all other materials have been submitted and reviewed, according to Carlow University's admission guidelines.
