Sonography is defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as the use of sound waves to generate images for the diagnosis and assessment of a variety of medical conditions. Many schools offer online accredited sonography programs for students to complete while only having to physically attend the clinical portion of the program.

Mountain State University

Mountain State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. This school has online options for students to obtain their education in sonography. Students have the option to complete their certificate, associate degree or bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography completely online. The clinical experiences in this program are set up as close as possible to the student’s geographic location. Students will be required to visit the campus for three days before they enter into the clinical portion of the program. Students take courses that include medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology and ultrasound instrumentation. Upon graduation from the program, students will be eligible to take the ARDMS exam in the areas of abdomen, vascular, obstetrics and gynecology, echocardiography and sonography principles and instrumentation.

Washburn University

Washburn University offers a sonography program that is completed entirely online. The clinical portion of the program is usually set up close to the students’ residence. This program maintains its accreditation with the CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs), which is recommended by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students take courses that include introduction to ultrasound, general sonography procedures, vascular sonography procedures, human disease and physics and instrumentation.

Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences

Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences maintains its accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and has an online sonography program that leads to a bachelor of science degree upon completion; the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) recognizes this program, which is delivered entirely online and requires no campus visits. Students complete this program in six trimesters that last for 14 weeks each and take courses that include sectional anatomy, legal and ethical aspects of healthcare, diagnostic imaging and medical imaging in the digital environment. Students who complete this program must display professionalism and competence at a high level while serving the field of healthcare, the sonography profession and the community.
