Conversations with your potential love interest can help you discover if you are compatible with each other. Studies have shown that the people we date usually don't match our ideals. Asking the right questions can help you figure out if the other person is right for you before you become too involved.

1 The Future

Ask questions that will help you see if his future plans are in line with yours. Start by asking what he's looking for in a relationship. If you're looking for something serious, it's better to find out early in the stages of the relationship if he's not ready to commit. Questions about future plans can also help you see if you have similar goals. Ask questions about where he wants to be in the next five years and what his long-term goals are. These kinds of discussions can also help him see you as potential relationship material, rather than just someone to have fun with. A study published in the September 2011 edition of "Journal of Experimental Psychology" found that discussing topics that are abstract and future-oriented lead to seeing the relationship as having long-term potential rather than being just a one-night stand.

2 Compatibility Questions

Knowing her interests and daily activities and being honest about yours help you determine if you have things in common. Ask questions such as, what does a typical day look like for you? or what do you do on weekends? Inquire about her hobbies or if she participates in sports.

3 Learn About Their Opinions

Ask him questions about his views on important issues and his spiritual beliefs. You can ask if he goes to church or what is the most important thing facing the country. Determine if there are any bad habits that can be deal breakers for your relationship by asking him what things he would like to change about himself or if he has any bad habits that he cannot get rid of.

4 Keep It Positive

Although you want to learn if the other person has relationship potential, it is still important to keep your conversations light-hearted and playful. Ask her funny questions, such as "what is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?" that will bring humor into the conversation while providing you with an opportunity to learn more about her. Find out how your love interest finds pleasure in life and analyze if it is similar to what makes you happy.
